1991 Deutsche Strassenmeisterschaft

The honour of winning the first (and second) race of the brand new Pro-Superbike Championship went to Australian Rob Phillis, making a guest appearance between European legs of the World Championship, but as the first German licence-holder home it was Udo Mark who claimed maximum points in the season opener - as he would in the entire first half of the year. Mark took 9 consecutive victories while also being a top-10 runner in World Superbike, and even a crash at Augsburg followed by a season-ending shoulder injury in the German championships at Aalen-Elchingen never loosened his grasp on the title. For most of the year he was joined on the podium by Toni Heiler and Bernd Caspers who regularly swapped 2nd and 3rd places between themselves. #1-plate holder Andreas Hofmann, winner of the 1990 German Superbike Championship, looked poised to challenge Mark but his winning partnership with Honda and Eckert Motorradtechnik ended abruptly in May - bike tuner and team owner Roland Eckert withdrew from motorsport entirely after the untimely death of his son Jochen in a road accident.
