1991 FIM Diesel Jeans Superbike World Championship
Raymond Roche's late-season success in 1990 looked less impressive when Doug Polen arrived in the championship for 1991. Polen never finished lower than 5th and most of his 17 wins were won from pole position; his championship was confirmed with 4 races left to run. Most of the time if Polen didn't win then Raymond Roche did, showing Ducati's dominance and their arguable advantage gained from lower weight limits. Kawasaki's Rob Phillis finished a narrow 3rd behind Roche - although the 1990 champion didn't even travel to the final round - while the fast but inconsistent Stéphane Mertens took 4th overall and guest appearances from Kevin Magee and Aaron Slight brought some excitement late in the year. The justified rider boycott of the Canadian round in June left a mark on the World Championship's credibility, but it continued to thrive with its 5th year on the horizon.
